Versilia Solutions and Best Bar None launch aviation industry’s first alcohol responsibility training
With passenger numbers set to surge this summer, Versilia Solutions has teamed up with Best Bar None to introduce the aviation industry’s first specialised alcohol responsibility training programme.
Aimed at cabin crew and inflight retail teams, the training equips staff with the skills to identify early signs of passenger intoxication, confidently manage challenging situations, and consistently apply airline alcohol policies. Delivered through Luz, Versilia’s intuitive training app, the programme seamlessly integrates into busy work schedules and offers participants a transferable certification for future use.
An urgent and growing issue
In 2022, UK airlines reported over 1,000 disruptive passenger incidents—nearly triple the figure recorded in 2019—with most linked to alcohol. Diverting a flight due to disruption can cost airlines up to £80,000, while the emotional and physical toll on crew and passengers is even harder to quantify.
Research highlights that over half of cabin crew members have witnessed or experienced abuse, including physical and sexual assault, from intoxicated passengers. Despite this, formalised responsible alcohol service training has been notably absent from inflight training—until now.
Adapting proven ground-based practices to the skies
Best Bar None, backed by the Home Office, is widely respected across the UK’s hospitality industry for its expertise in alcohol management. Collaborating closely with Versilia Solutions, Best Bar None has successfully adapted its proven principles to meet the unique demands of aviation.
The Lord Smith of Hindhead, Chairman of Best Bar None, commented: “Given the rising number of alcohol-related incidents, this programme is not just timely—it’s essential. I encourage airports to pursue Best Bar None accreditation and airlines to equip their staff with this practical, empowering training. Together, we can ensure calmer cabins, safer skies, and consistent alcohol service protocols.”
Putting people first
Sue Walker, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Versilia Solutions, said:
“This training is fundamentally about protecting people. Cabin crews and inflight retail teams are handling more complex situations than ever, often without adequate tools. This programme provides clarity and confidence, while our app Luz ensures easy, convenient access within their workflow. We’re proud to lead the industry in enhancing passenger and crew safety and experience.”
Simple to deliver, impactful results
Key elements of the programme include:
· Recognising early signs of intoxication
· De-escalation techniques
· Consistent application of airline policies
· Practical guidance for timely interventions
The training emphasises real-world scenarios over theory, prioritising safer, more consistent service to support both crew wellbeing and positive passenger experiences.
